Gina Papa, LMFT, CDS is currently in private practice in Los Angeles and Pasadena.. Certified in the use of Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Therapy (TFCBT)*.   With a childhood spent in community and local theatre in San Diego, she became interested in therapy when working with children the Maryvale home for girls in Rosemead, CA.  Receiving clinical training at the Early Childhood Center, at Cedar Sinai she has worked as a family therapist and mental health consultant for Head Start and various school programs.  As the former Director of the Para Los Ninos Mental Health Program she has facilitated training of interns and supervisors in the use of play therapy and the creative use of evidence based practices for the children and families living and working in the skid row area of Downtown Los Angeles.

This workshop will teach mental health care professionals to:

  • Identify developmentally appropriate drama therapy interventions for their client population.

  • Learn at least two dramatic play therapy interventions to enhance positive coping skills and decision making.

  • Learn at least two play and improvisation techniques for conflict resolution and to increase playfulness and communication.

  • Incorporate the use of improvisation and dramatic play within the evidence based frameworks of TFCBT

  • Assess and identify structural themes of family relationships and dynamics

The Presenter

This workshop will be experiential, involving, dramatic play, movement and participation. Please come in comfortable clothes and get ready to play pretend.  The instructor will provide a framework for using dramatic play therapy, with families and children of all ages in a developmentally and therapeutically appropriate manner.  Integrating the theory of mind with drama therapy, in order to identify core themes in families, create trauma narratives, and build coping skills and agency in our clients and ourselves. For clinicians that are familiar with evidence based practices, this workshop provides be used to expand the work of the evidence based intervention of Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Child Parent Psychotherapy.
